Durham is an excellent example of location factors for a Settlement
Key Points:
- ‘Durham’ derives froms ‘Dun Holm’ – meaning ‘Hill
Island’ in Nordic. Later the name was ‘corrupted’ to
the Anglo-Saxon sounding Durham
- the city was founded as the final resting place of St. Cuthbert
in 995AD
- excellen defensive site on a tight meander of the River Wear
- a religious based city, with later defensive and economic
development
